During 2008 NOPGA competitions, except events used as qualifiers for PGA National Events, THE USE OF ELECTRONIC MEASURING DEVICES (EMD's) IS PERMITTED. Electronic Measuring Devices (EMD's) include GPS-based systems, hand-held devices, etc.
The Following LOCAL RULE will be in effect for NOPGA competitions, excluding National PGA Qualifying events, during the 2008 season:
“In NOPGA competitions for 2008, a player may obtain distance information by using a device that measures distance only. However, if, during a stipulated round, a player uses a distance-measuring device that is designed to gauge or measure other conditions that might affect his play (e.g., gradient, wind speed, temperature, etc.), the player is in breach of Rule 14-3, for which the penalty is disqualification, regardless of whether any such additional functions are actually used.”
The wording of this Local Rule means that a player may not use a device that is also capable of measuring conditions other than distance, even if those functions are “turned off” during a competition.
Furthermore, the NOPGA will have in place, at every NOPGA competition, excluding National PGA qualifying events, specially-equipped LASER LINK reflective Flagsticks which facilitate the measuring process.
